The Joy of Koi

For centuries, Koi have been cultivated for their beauty, grace, gentleness, longevity, and intelligence. Unlike most finned pets, Koi have the ability to learn their habitat, navigate mazes, overcome physical obstacles, interact with their keepers, and even obey commands. Even beginner Koi enthusiasts can quickly teach Koi to hand feed, while more advanced Koi keepers have taught Koi to eat from baby bottles.

Pets are popular companions for the neurologically injured as an adjunct to recovery and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, following neurological injuries like Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), stroke, aphasia, etc. Many people are not able to provide verbal pet commands or physically care for pets like dogs and cats. The very characteristics that have been cultivated in Koi fish make them the ideal pet for such patients.

The High Alert Institute is working to partner with pond installers and aquatic pet rescues/shelters to offer free or reduced-cost Koi ponds and rehomed fish to aid in their recovery and rehab because everyone deserves a pet.
